Warfarin (Coumadin) is a drug used to slow blood clotting. Warfarin can cause bleeding. Follow doctor orders for taking warfarin.
A PT/INR is the blood test that measures the time it takes for the blood to clot. Have all PT/INR blood testing done as ordered. Foods high in vitamin K (broccoli, kale, cooked spinach, turnip greens) can change the PT/INR level. Do not avoid vitamin K foods. Eat the same amount of vitamin K foods daily.
Talk to your doctor before making any big diet changes. Some medicines (multiple vitamins with vitamin K) can change the PT/INR level. Do not start or stop any medicine or over-the-counter medicine without talking to your doctor. Know the name and phone number of the person checking your PT/INR. Know the date and time of your next PT/INR test.
