What is Diabetes?

10 Sep

Diabetes is a disease of high blood sugar.

The pancreas makes insulin, a hormone that helps sugar get into the body’s cells. The body needs sugar for energy. When sugar cannot get into the cells, it stays in the blood. High blood sugar harms every cell in the body.

There are two types of diabetes, Type 1 and type 2. Type 2 diabetes is most common. Diabetes is strongly related to heart disease/strokes.
