That jolt you get from a cup of joe may help prevent Alzheimer’s. Researchers report that people age 65 and over who drank 3 to 4 cups of coffee a day were more likely to postpone or prevent the development of the memory-robbing disease. Caffeinated coffee may suppress enzymes involved in the formation of neuron-damaging plaque. It may also boost levels of eytokines, which protect against dementia, says study leader Chuanhai Cao, PhD, a neuroscientist at the University of South Florida College of Pharmacy in Tampa, who drinks 2 to 3 cups a day himself.
