The next time you feel the sniffles coming on, reach for zinc. Finnish researchers found that taking a 75 mg daily dose of zinc gluconate or zinc acetate for one week can shorten your suffering by up to four days. The catch?
Additives like citric and ascorbic acids (and to a lesser extent, glycine) may reduce the benefits, so look for lozenges that don’t contain these ingredients, plus have at least 12 mg of zinc. Or dissolve a 25 mg zinc tablet in your mouth three times a day.
