Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps blood. When blood pressure stays in a normal range (below 120/80 mm Hg), it reduces the strain on your heart, arteries, and kidneys.
Eat a heart-healthy, low-salt diet (around 1,500 mg/day of sodium).
Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products.
Stay active and at a healthy weight. (Losing as few as 5 or 10 pounds can greatly reduce blood pressure).
Limit alcohol (no more than 2 drinks per day for men and 1 drink for women).
Talk to your doctor about your family history.
