Key steps in eating a heart-healthy diet, according to the American Heart Association include:
Eat a variety of deeply colored fruits and vegetables.
Eat fiber-rich whole-grain foods.
Eat fish at least twice a week, for additional protein, choose skinless lean meats and poultry and prepare them without adding saturated and trans fat. Select fat-free, 1% fat, and low-fat dairy products.
Cut back on saturated and trans fats, cholesterol and added sugars.
Choose and prepare foods with little or no salt. Aim to eat less than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day.
