“It’s common for kidney function to decrease with age, but this is usually a very slow process,” says Consumer Reports chief medical advisor, Marvin M. Lipman, M.D. Still, about 30 percent of older adults are misclassified as having advanced CKD, which can lead to unnecessary tests and treatments according to a 2013 review in the British Medical Journal. In general, CKD can be held in check by limiting protein and potassium.
