People with constipation had an average 13% higher risk of developing kidney disease and 9% higher for kidney failure than people who were not constipated. Kidney function declined faster in people with more severe constipation.

Possible reason: Constipation may indicate changes in the mix of microorganisms in the gut, and those changes may lead to kidney disease. Further research is needed.
