Anytime pain is severe, you should see your doctor. Other than that, use these guidelines:
Go ahead: Muscle soreness from working out is normal, so it’s generally fine to keep moving.
Proceed with caution: If your neck or back aches, you can stay active, but switch to a low-impact activity that won’t further aggravate the area.
Put on the brakes: When the pain is in a joint, it might mean a sprain or tear of cartilage or tendons. Rest and apply ice, and see your doctor if you’re not fine in a few days.
