In a study of 183 overweight and obese adults in a year-long weight loss program, those whose early weight loss was consistent kept more pounds off than those whose weight went up and down.
Researchers say that weight cycling, dieters may be alternating between strict, rule-based diets and periods of indulgence rather than making small, sustainable changes in diet and exercise.
