Finding the "Spread" Switch
Dr. Welch and his team found something amazing inside the mitochondria—the tiny "power plants" that give our cells energy. It turns out these power plants have their own mini-instruction manual (DNA).
Inside that manual, they found tiny "typos" called polymorphisms. These typos act like a master switch for cancer. Some typos tell the cancer cells to stay put (good!), while others tell the cancer cells to travel to other parts of the body (bad!).
Why this matters: By finding these "factory workers" (molecules) that control the switch, we can create brand-new medicines to block the "spread" signal or copy the "stay put" signal. It’s a totally new way to fight cancer that hasn’t been tried before!
Stopping Bone Cancer in Kids
We are proud to support cancer research with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) specifically for Osteosarcoma—a type of bone cancer that often affects children and teens.
The biggest danger with this cancer is when it moves from the bones to the lungs. Our funding helps scientists understand the "moving crew" that helps these cancer cells travel.
If we can figure out exactly how these cells manage to survive the trip from the bone to the lung, we can develop treatments that cut off their path. This keeps the cancer in one place where it is much easier for doctors to treat.
