This could be an early sign of osteoarthritis, reports Grace Hsiao-Wei Lo, MD. The more often the clicking or popping noises occur, a condition called crepitus, the more likely someone is to develop symptoms of knee osteoarthritis within a year. If you have crepitus, talk to your doctor about having a knee x-ray, it may help catch osteoarthritis in its earliest, most treatable stages, even before pain and stiffness develop.
